Default Delhi University student misses exam due to roll number goof-up

The first dupe of the attendance failure at the Delhi University came out in the open on Monday. Ravi(name changed on request), a student of BCom (programme) at Dyal Singh College, was stopped from writing his first examination despite having 78% attendance, which is much higher than the required 66.67%.

"There are two types of roll numbers under the Delhi University system. One provided by the college — under which the attendance is calculated, and the university roll number. The wrong college roll number was mentioned against the university number and the student was at the receiving end," said Naveen Gaur, a teacher at Dyal Singh College.

Ravi's matter came to light only when a teacher observed him crying in a corner of the college on Monday — the day of his second examination. After listening to the student's issue, the teacher informed the principal and a inspection of his records was done. It was revealed that he had been wrongly detained because of a college goof-up.

Meanwhile, more and more students affected by the detention order of the Delhi University have started to raise their voice.

On Monday, more than 60 students barred from taking their semester examinations held a protest outside the office of the Dean Students' Welfare, shouting slogans and demanding a clear answer from the university administration on their future. The university, however, remained tight lipped.

After missing the first exam, the student was allowed to give the second exam after the mistake came to light.

"The student did not come to us on the day of his first exam. Had he done so we would have tried to find a solution then and there”. After we discovered the mistake, the student was allowed to appear for the exam," said IS Bakshi, principal, Dyal Singh College.
